Shhh. I'm hunting a wabbit!

Mon May 14, 2007 at 06:42:15 PM PDT

For the umptyumpth time, I've listened to some half-baked pundit peddling the line about how, if we tell the [insurgents|Al Qaeda|militia] that we might leave Iraq at a set time, they will just 'wait us out'.

Hot Flash: Of course they will wait us out - they live there!

I know I'm dating myself, but have you ever seen one of the old Bugs Bunny cartoons, where Elmer Fudd is out hunting?

Elmer looks at the 'camera' and says in sotto voce, "Shh. I'm hunting a wabbit!." Bugs stands right behind him with a carrot in his hand and asks "What's up Doc?" Elmer looks over his shoulder, annoyed, and hisses: "Shh. I'm hunting a wabbit!"

Well, I keep getting this flashback, except that now I see a Sunni insurgent, or an Al Qaeda in Iraq thug, or a Shiite militia, or a Maliki crony as Bugs and Bush or [substitute favorite Republican pundit] as Elmer.

When, oh when, will some tiny little grey cell fire and tell anyone on the Republican side that this is an away game. We're not liberating the Iraqis. We're not supporting the Iraqis. We're not even occupying the Iraqis. Shinseki said it would take 400,000 troops to do that, and last I counted ...

You know what we're doing? We're "hunting a wabbit."

It would be funny - except its not.

Disclaimer: I would never confuse our military forces with Elmer or any other cartoon character. They're in a deadly serious endeavor and I pray for their safety. The cartoon reference is reserved solely for the Republican pundits and chickenhawks that sent them there.
