Outing: Is it ever OK? With a poll

Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 06:16:43 AM PDT

Outing, as I would assume most people here know, is forcing someone out of the closet, i.e. showing them to be gay. It is most often done when the person ia in some position of power and the person has either done something that has not advanced gay rights OR more usually hurt the gay community at the same time the person is gay themselves.

I am obviously writing this as 1 gay man's view and voice and no way do I represent nor wish to nor would ever hope to represent anything then just little old me.

McCain Scrubs Mentions Of Possibly Outed Alabama AG

Sat Jul 12, 2008 at 12:15:45 AM PDT

Amazing.

The folks at Pensito Review have been doing a little research this afternoon... Seems Walnuts McCain's camp has completely scrubbed their website of any and all mention of Troy King. Hmph.

Alabama AG Gay Sex Scandal/Resignation Story Update

Thu Jul 10, 2008 at 10:43:26 PM PDT

fishbowlAMERICA:The state of Alabama remains abuzz over just what is going on with these Troy King resignation rumors. The Republican Attorney General, who succeeded William Pryor after his controversial appointment to the federal bench, has been seen by many as a potential gubernatorial candidate when current Governor Bob Riley leaves office.

There are some who believe the initial source of the rumors are those from Riley himself. It has long been rumored that Riley's reason for running for Congress, and later Governor, was to pave a path for his son Rob Riley, a former SGA president and leader of the Machine at the University of Alabama. Rob Riley was on the infamous conference call with GOP operative Bill Canary and Dana Jill Simpson, when it was inferred that Canary would use Karl Rove and the Justice Department to investigate Riley's former opponent, Governor Don Siegelman.

WSFA, Montgomery's WSFA affiliate told some bloggers who inquired about the station running a story on King, said that King was going through a divorce, and that they wouldn't be running a story of such a private matter.

WGLB TV NEWS: Out is In and In is Out!

Fri Jul 04, 2008 at 05:45:01 AM PDT

Last week I was out walking around the Back Bay-South End area of Boston and I passed one of my favorite people watching venues, the First Church of Christ, Scientist. The architecture and layout of the complex is amazing. The mother church is the large domed structure in the distance. Designed in the 1960s by the firm of renowned architect I.M. Pei, the 14-acre Christian Science Plaza along Huntington Ave houses the offices of the Christian Science Monitor and includes a reflecting pool and fountain that make it one of Boston's most visually recognizable sites and a popular tourist attraction. The elevated reflection pool makes the surrounding edifices appear floating in this sea of architectural tranquility. This reflecting pool is truly an engineering marvel. More under the rainbow...

J.K. Rowling and the Closet of Secrets

Sat Oct 20, 2007 at 12:46:48 PM PDT

The Harry Potter series may be concluded, but author J.K. Rowling continues to shed revelations about the story. The latest is here: J.K. Rowling Outs Hogwarts Character (If you'd prefer not to know, don't click the link.)

It's no secret that many people have looked beyond the story of Harry Potter to find deeper political meanings in her work. In the news story above, Rowling notes that tolerance is a major theme in the HP stories; it is something she apparently finds in short supply these days. I can see why she's waited until now to make this revelation. She would never have been allowed to write the books the way she did if she'd let this slip earlier. As it is, the Fundamentalists who want to see all of the HP canon burned will only become angrier.

And yet, this revelation is not incompatible with anything we already knew about the character in question. It adds a dimension to their character that explains much, and in no way (in my opinion) diminishes them. (more)

Rumors that Condoleezza Rice is Gay.

Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 02:51:16 PM PDT

A new round of outings of high-profile Republicans is occurring, and the most recent person caught up in this is none other than Secretary of State Condolezza Rice. WP Reporter Glen Kessler reveals the information that causes one to raise questions in his new book about her.

According to the book, Rice owns a home together with Randy Bean, a documentary filmmaker who once worked with Bill Moyers. Kessler made the discovery by looking through real estate records.

Bean explained the joint ownership and line of credit to Kessler by saying she had medical bills which left her financially drained and Rice helped her by co-purchasing the house along with a third person, Coit Blacker, a Stanford professor who is openly gay.

Blacker later sold his line of credit to Rice and Bean.

No more outing

Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 02:02:57 PM PDT

In the Summer of 2004, I began to share my frustration about closted, anti-gay politicians and high-level staffers with my friends and acquaintances. During those chats and in strategy talks about the launch of the site -- many with my blogfather John Aravosis -- friends and colleagues always used the word 'outing.'

At the time, I did not know that Michelangelo Signorile had written about the origins of the word and that its etymology shows the word was coined by a closeted gay man. Signorile, of course, is the godfather of modern day reporting of these stories. In the early 1990s edgy publications like OutWeek, took on these under reported stories -- with Signorile leading the way.

Enough is Enough

Thu Sep 06, 2007 at 09:37:50 AM PDT

The time when politicians can stand with one foot on the platform of homophobia and the other in the closet has come to an end.

Over three years ago -- within a month of the launch of my site, BlogActive.com - the following landed in the inbox:

From: [redacted]

Sent: Monday, August 09, 2004 12:30 PM

To: Mike Rogers

Subject: Outing

I've hooked up with Craig... why not out some actual members and not their staffers?

That one line note started an odyssey that included trips to places like Boise, Seattle and Columbus. Now, twenty-two months later, the effects of that work are reverberating throughout Washington and the nation. People are finally getting that gay Americans have had enough.

Outing Anti-Gay Homosexual Politicians

Wed Sep 05, 2007 at 07:49:40 AM PDT

from Schmitz Blitz: schmitzblitz.wordpress.com

The Washington Post ran an article yesterday about Mike Rogers,  blogger from BlogActive, who's goal is to out closeted gay politicians who support anti-gay policies. Rogers' targets have included Senator Larry Craig, Virginia Congressman Ed Schrock, and Congressman Mark Foley.  Rogers is also aiming to out 33 more closeted Congressman with anti-gay records.

I Call Foul On the Goodbye Diary

Fri Feb 02, 2007 at 04:44:55 AM PDT

You can't repeatedly link to your real name, for everyone to see, and then claim that you've been outed when someone else points out that information.

Delaware Dem has repeatedly linked to his personal photo blog for Daily Kos users. I have known his real name for almost a year. As has anyone else who's clicked on the links he provided to his real name. His photos are really good. But they weren't a secret.

Do you have a blog? (46+ / 0-)

Then post a link to it here.

Last night I launched Version 2.0 of my photoblog Milhouse's Glasses.

Here is a new pic:

Bait & Switch

Thu Feb 01, 2007 at 05:31:09 PM PDT

Meh.

I never intended for this thread to get on the Recommended List, and the comment thread is tiresome to a fault. If you want to read what I originally posted, toddle on over to Street Prophets.

But if you want to talk about something useful, try talking about the Quilt Contest some of the SP's are having.

In the meantime, please unrecommend this piece of crap, and then go to bed.

Outing and the ideal world (not meta)

Sun Jan 07, 2007 at 02:22:41 AM PDT

In Big Tent Democrat's diary Meta: Outing there were several interesting side-threads about the other kind of outing - outing of a person's characteristics, sexual preferences, and so on.  That wasn't the main point of that diary, and the threads were scattered, so I thought another diary on the topic was warranted.

My thoughts are below the fold

The Ethics of Outing Homophobic Closeted Queers

Thu Nov 16, 2006 at 11:15:23 AM PDT

How would you feel if you were outed on national news before you were even prepared to come out? Imagine coming out to all of your friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances at the exact same time. Imagine all this happening in a very conservative area known as Colorado Springs. On top of everything, imagine this happening before you have even come out to yourself, before you have accepted who you are. What do you do? I'm going to preface this diary by saying that it may spark heated debate, since the issue is such a charged one in the GLBT community. There is NO consensus on this issue, so no answer is the wrong answer.

Must-See YouTV: Ken Mehlman Gets a Taste of His Own Medicine

Fri Nov 10, 2006 at 12:15:33 PM PDT

Folks, you just have to see this (mock) ad giving Ken Mehlman a taste of his own medicine, in terms of the despicable anti-Harold Ford "Call Me" ad Mehlman oversaw as head of the RNC.

I remind "outing" is fair game for virulent gay-baiting (self-)haters like Ken Mehlman and Larry Craig.

A few more characters to go, and this becomes a diary.

Gay bashing hurts: I refuse to be political football

Fri Nov 03, 2006 at 12:36:32 PM PDT

When Kerry lost in 2004 some Democrats suggested that the "gays lost it."  We pushed for our rights at the wrong time, and gave a reason for the right-wing to get mobilized and to win.  Few things in politics upset me more than this double cross on the part of otherwise well-meaning liberals.  We did not do anything to make the Democrats lose.  We were used, as targets.  And we were abandoned by many who should of been our natural allies.  And that hurt - both ways.

He stepped down! Ted Haggard from New Life Church Outed as Gay (Voicemails were recorded)

Thu Nov 02, 2006 at 07:44:34 AM PDT

MAJOR UPDATE (3:30pm Mountain Time): Ted Haggard just stepped down as President of the New Life Church and the National Association of Evangelicals according to the Channel 9 News. A news conference was setup by several evangelical leaders to support Haggard but was quickly cancelled before the announcement of his "temporary" leave

This news is burning through the state faster than the Hayman Fire.

Pastor Ted Haggard, leader of the 14,000 member New Life Church and President of the National Association of Evangelicals, has been outed as gay, accused of paying a prostitute and (if that wasn't enough) being a meth user. Haggard is probably next in line to James Dobson and Pat Robertson when it comes to influential Evangelicals.

Denver's 9 News has been investigating the story for two months and announced it yesterday.

So far Haggard denies the allegations but I personal am looking forward to the Jimmy Swaggart like apology I HAVE SINNED AGAINST YOU MY LORD!

BREAKING: Prominent Queer Outed as Member of Congress

Sat Oct 21, 2006 at 03:34:04 AM PDT

October 21, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (AP)—The City's orthodox gay Castro District was rocked late Friday by stunning allegations that one of its leading lights has in fact long been living a sordid, "double life" on the opposite coast.

Internet and phone records, as well as Capitol parking stubs, NSA wiretap transcripts, and certain hair samples from communal baths in the Rayburn Building, were provided to the Associated Press by an anonymous source. The evidence overwhelmingly suggests that Big Gay Al, a well-known spokesman for the queer movement, has been serving clandestinely as a member of Congress since 1996.

Typical of the nebulously damning material provided by the source was the following internet chat exchange, deemed "quite possibly authentic" by our font-kerning experts:

Do shmucks have rights?

Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 06:34:35 AM PDT

Several diaries over the past several days have discussed the 'outing' of Larry Craig Benito's diary or outing in general Pico's diary.  In these diaries, I got into some hot (but nearly always civil) debate with people who thought differently than I do (I am opposed to outing anyone against their will, ever).

I wanted to broaden the discussion.  If you want to, also, follow me below the fold.
